SCORE! Pop-Up Swap Dummy

SCORE! — for more than dummies.

OMG, you missed it? Boo hoo! Go cry your emo eyes out over the spilt organic soy milk of your freecycling soul!

Last week’s  SCORE! Pop-Up Swap at 3rd Ward basically ruled, besting the Mormons who clearly need a latter day style saint to help curate.

With a DJ, drinks, and mounds of delectable donations, the lively scene had hipsters hauling carts of clothes and kitstch out the door.

I lugged 4 bags of books, baubles and clothes to this Fun-raiser, which donated leftovers to charity and $3 door fees to my very fave do-gooders City Harvest.

Paula Deen gets Attacked by A Ham

How do them pig knuckles feel, Paula?

Food Network celebu-chef Paula Deen got clocked in the face by an airborne ham yesterday while unloading charity meat in Atlanta. In a game of pass the piggie. she tossed a ham to a guy who tossed it back…at her head. Don’t whip your lard into a froth though, she tweets “I haven’t met the ham that could stop me yet!” Continue reading

The Blue House In Coyoacan, Freida Kahlo's Home and Atlar on Day of the Dead

While the rest of you Halloweenies were  doing the Monster Mash, I hit up Mexico’s real graveyard smash: Day of the Dead. This happy holiday comes decked in altars and ofrendas full of skeletal dopplegangers of homies gone by. Peep The Apopcalypse’s Skulleton Crew of our favorite calaveras!

Above: This is from the altar at The Blue House of Frida Kahlo, shared with hubby Diego Rivera, in the neighborhood of Coyoacán…

The Older Woman Files: My Younger Boyfriend Just Turned 25

I'm dating a younger man. Yes, I'm The Older Woman.

Boy, oh boy. As in, I am dating one.

My Younger Boyfriend recently turned 25, narrowing our age gap to 7, vs. 8, years. I feel slightly less dirty when I tell people our ages (and they always seem to ask), you know, the subtle difference between saying “I maimed your mother” vs “I killed her.”

My Younger Boyfriend is sort of freaking out about his age. “I’m sooooo ooooooold,” he’ll moan.

I either roll my eyes or kiss him.

When I turned 25, I had a rollerskating party at The Roxy.  Mr. Cheeks’ “Lights, Camera, Action” was my Bday jam. Since then, The Roxy has closed and Cheeks has fallen off the face of pop. My Younger Boyfriend doesn’t miss ’em. He’s never heard of them. Continue reading

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Swap Meet, Inwood

No Big Love for Mormon Clothes Swap.

Really, I was just jonesing for this coming weekend’s SCORE! Pop Up Swap at 3rd Ward, a freebie-for-all orgy of unwashed hair and hipster haul I kind of can’t wait for. But lo! While scouring the New York City Freecycle site, I came across an uptown, a very very uptown, an Inwood-may-as-well-be-the-North Pole uptown clothing/goods exchange at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Here’s a review of the scene… Continue reading

worm slippers vermicomposting

Worm up to slipper maker Esther Nijdam

While most get sucked in the e-muck of Perez or Facebook or YouTube, I age gracefully trolling websites about worms — glorious, segmented, slimy worms. Among my fave sites is brillz blog Red Worm Composting, from which I swiped the above pic on awesome post “Interesting Gift Ideas For Worm Fanatics.” Yes. You now know what to get me for Jizzy Chrizzy’s bday.

I love worms. I have two bins of worms transforming food scraps into “black gold” that I put on my plants. Over 2000 earthworms eat, sleep, poop, and make worm bebes doing the worm nasty in my apartment. It’s called vermicomposting, an eek-o chic way to deal with waste… Continue reading

Skin Sandra Laing Movie

Sandra Laing's race: not so black and white.

Last week found me in Conference Room 4 of the United Nations, butt snugged in Namibia’s seat, mini mic before me, at a special screening of “Skin.” The she’s-white-no-she’s-black biopic is the true story of Sandra Laing, a distinctly dark-skinned girl born to white Afrikaner parents in the 1950s. They claim she’s white, the law (and eventually she) says she’s “colored,” she falls for a hot black dude, and mind-boggling apartheid bigotry ensues.

The award-winning film — out in NY and LA and arriving nationwide this month  — stars Sophie Okonedo as Sandra. But holy heartstrings! The real-life Laing came to the U.N. for the screening, and did a Q&A with director Anthony Fabian. Here are highlights from what they said… Continue reading
